On December 1, 2013, Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital together with Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Deputy Dean and Director of Siriraj Medical School, Professor Suwannee Suraseraneewong, Deputy Dean for Postgraduate medical education, Professor Dr. Chirayu Auewarakul, Deputy Dean for International Relations and Sith Sathornsumetee, Assistant Dean for International Relations attended the 2nd ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit at Faculty of Medicine University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They were welcomed with a warm hospitality by faculty administrative from University of Malaya led by Professor Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Dean of Faculty of Medicine. This summit was the second after the successful first ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit in 2012 hosted by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.

During 25 – 28 July 2016, Professor Suwannee Suraseranivongse, Deputy Dean and Director of Siriraj Medical School along with Associate Professor Preeyanuj Yamwong, Deputy Dean and Professor Dr. Chirayu Auewarakul, Deputy Dean for International Relations had attended the 5th ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit and the 1st ASEAN Student Collaborative Project, hosted by Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia in the aims of discussion about the progress of collaborative projects; accreditation and quality self-assessment, student collaboration, charter of ASEAN Medical School Network, and other action plans among medical schools in ASEAN region.

 The 2nd ASEAN and Allied Countries Medical Research Network Meeting


On September 12, 2013, at 08.45 a.m. Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, presided at the opening of an annual research symposium called “The second ASEAN Medical Research Network Meeting”, along with Professor Dr. Ruengpung Sutthent, Deputy Dean for Research, at Siriraj Medical Research Center, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. This was a two-day event (12 – 13 September) held for the delegates from 10 ASEAN countries to encourage and enhance research collaborations among ASEAN countries. Each delegate came from top universities in their countries; to name a few, Health Sciences University of Mongolia (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oyungerel Ravjir), International University & Sen Sok IU Hospital of Cambodia (Assist. Prof. Dr. Anderson Amirthanathan), University of Medicine, Mandalay, Myanmar (Prof. Dr. Saw Kler Ku), Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (Dr. Budiman Bela), University of Malaya, Malaysia, (Dr. Tee Kok Keng), University of Health Sciences, Lao PDR (Dr. Visanou Hanesana), Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam, (Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Vu Trung), University of the Philippines (Dr. Regina Berba), National University Health System, Singapore, (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tiow – Suan Sim), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lin Naing), and Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital (Assist. Prof. Dr. Sathien Sukpanichnant.

For the research symposium, the topics were divided into two groups: communicable diseases such as HIV/Aids and TB, and Non-communicable diseases. There was also a discussion on “Strengthening Medical Lab for services and research: Accreditation with ASEAN standard and international standard (ISO 15189).

On September 13, an international conference was held under the topics “Innovations in Research” and “Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology.” There were a lot of interesting lectures on these topics. For example, “Regional Collaboration in Postgraduate Training” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Ngoc Hoat from Hanoi Medical University (Vietnam), “Perception of Medical Students in Clinical Learning” by Assist. Prof. Dr. Bunthoeun Im from University of Health Sciences (Cambodia), “Medical Curriculum Development in Mongolia” by Prof. Dr. Otgonbayar Radnaa from Health Sciences University of Mongolia, “Postgraduate Research Studies at the university of Medicine 1” by Prof. Dr. Myat Thandar from University of Medicine 1 (Yangon, Myanmar), and “Transforming Research into Innovation” by Dr. Kant Weerakant, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital (Thailand.)

Siriraj Hosted Accreditation Working Group Meeting preparing to work as one community under the AEC by 2015


During 24-25 July 2014, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital hosted Accreditation Working Group Meeting. There are 10 representatives from ASEAN countries to deliver a talk on “Accreditation of Medical Schools among ASEAN Countries”. This meeting held from the successful second ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit at Faculty of Medicine University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in order to promote collaboration among leading medical schools in ASEAN; to leverage medical education and health systems towards international excellence; to share human resources and provide capacity building for medical education and research and health systems in ASEAN countries; and to be prepared to work as one community under the AEC by 2015. Flash back to the 2nd ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit in Kuala Lumpur, the summit had divided the structure of the ASEAN Medical Schools Network into four divisions: 1). Education Working Group led by University of Malaya; 2). Research Working Group led by National University of Singapore; 3). Student Exchange Working Group led by University of Indonesia; and 4). Accreditation Working Group led by Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Each division will establish the goal, strategies and plans during the 2-year term. Collaborative activities can be organized by each Working Group with assistance from the secretariat office at Siriraj. After the successful 2nd summit, the 3rdsummit will be held in Singapore in September 2014. The Accreditation Working Group Meeting was chaired by Professor Prasit Watanapa and Dean Agnes from University of Philippines College of Medicine, Philippinens.
